Meet the Summer 2019 TIP Interns!

July 11, 2019
By Caroline Bradkin

The Intern Project (TIP) by the LA Promise Fund provides outstanding LA County high school students the opportunity to work in dynamic career areas through internships of at least four weeks during the summer. Edlio has been working with LA Promise Fund since 2014, hosting juniors and seniors from LA area high schools with internships in our marketing, client services, production, and product and development teams. This year, all the interns are rising seniors and working within different departments. I, Caroline, am working in the marketing department, writing blog posts and helping with video projects. Danny is working in client management, gaining experience in the tech support world and answering client questions. Nicha is working with our client success team, supporting them with their outreach. To learn more about The Intern Project, click here. Now, meet the interns!

1. How did you find out about The Intern Project?

Caroline: I found out through a friend that was applying.

Nicha: My counselor posts summer opportunities in the counseling center. That was where I notice the TIP program and signed up.

Danny: I searched up “productive things to do over the summer for high school students” my sophomore year of high school. I couldn’t apply because I was a sophomore, so I remembered the website name to apply during my junior year.

2. What part of Los Angeles do you commute from and how long is it?

Caroline: I commute from West Los Angeles, and it is usually about a 20-30 minute drive.

Nicha: I commute from Torrance and it takes about an hour for my dad to drive here.

Danny: I commute from South LA, and it takes me about 30-50 minutes depending on traffic.

3. What experience do you hope to gain from this internship?

Caroline: I hope to gain experience in marketing, a field that I can see myself working in throughout the future. I hope to have a better idea of the work environment is like in an office setting and create connections with my fellow employees.

Nicha: I am really interested in business and I hope to see what it is like in a real life setting as well as make connections and gain more hands on experience in a real company.

Danny: I really want to see if the technology field is meant for me. Throughout my whole high school career I’ve always done technology-related things. This internship has given me the experience I’ve always imagined from a tech company.

4. What career fields do you want to pursue later in life?

Caroline: Definitely something within marketing or communications.

Nicha: I want to go into business, but I also want it to relate to technology.

Danny: I want to pursue either client services or communication studies. I’m also really interested in entrepreneurship.

5. What is your favorite part about interning at Edlio?

Caroline: I love the environment! Everyone is so kind and truly wants to make sure all the interns enjoy our time here. The ping-pong table and office dog, Rilo, are very close seconds.

Nicha: I enjoy learning about their internal system. I find it interesting getting to understand their process and how they deal with issues. The people here are so also so nice and it makes me enjoy working here even more!

Danny: My favorite part about interning at Edlio would be the client and services team that I work with. I’ve learned so much from them, and they are always so helpful and willing to give advice on anything, from college applications to general life. And of course I can’t forget the snacks!

6. What does your typical day interning at Edlio look like?

Caroline: I usually have an assignment, such as a blog, that I am currently working on. Once I finish that, I ask my supervisor what my next steps are and get started on a new assignment.

Nicha: I come in and check in with my supervisor. She will give me an assignment and a run through of how to accomplish it. Once I finish I can turn to the rest of the team and find out if they need any help.

Danny: Upon walking in I am greeted by my supervisor. I login to my computer and go to Salesforce to work on some cases (questions/requests from our clients). I also have occasional trips to the kitchen to get some snacks.

7. What do you like to do in your free time?

Caroline: I am a competitive cheerleader and volunteer with NKLA, a no-kill animal shelter. I really enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends as well.

Nicha: I love drawing and reading books. On weekends I volunteer at a nature preserve where we restore the land so that students and families can see the natural landscape of the area if humans didn't develop it. I also enjoy tutoring and teaching art classes for middle schoolers.

Danny: I like to play my guitar and learn more bluesy/jazzy songs during my free time.

8. What advice can you give future interns?

Caroline: Stay focused and on task. Ask your supervisor questions, they are there to help! Have fun and learn from the experience!

Nicha: Remember that making mistakes is a part of the experience, and your supervisors are there to help.

Danny: Don’t stress and it’s okay if you mess up! Remember to ask questions!
We are so excited about the amazing work experience we will gain throughout our internships! Thank you Edlio for allowing us to have this incredible opportunity!
